Birding In North East India

North East India is any birders dream. One of less explored and a mysterious wilderness, North East India has some of India’s best preserved wildlife sanctuaries.    Suggested Tour Plan : DELHI – DIBRU SAIKHOWA NP – JORHAT – GIBON SANCTUARY – NEMERI – EAGLE-NEST – KAZIRANGA – MANAS – GUWAHATI – DELHI.

New Delhi : Light birding upon arrival to set the pace for the incredible North East India trail.  Places which can be covered are :
Sultanpur National Park : Located 37 km from New Delhi is the Sultanpur. The park is home many resident and migratory birds. The park is open to birding from October to June every year. Reaching there takes about 60 – 90 minutes from New Delhi City Centre (depending on the city traffic )

Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary : The place  is  easily accessible and has  7 species of primates. Walks are allowed and Hollock Gibbon easily sighted. The area has Northeastern India’s only nocturnal primate – the slow loris But you have to overnight in Gibbon itself to see the slow loris. The accommodation is basic inside Gibbon. There is a presence of pig tailed and stump tailed macaque which can be sighted with moderate luck. In .winter  (starting late October) it is good for forest birds several species of forest butterflies and giant squirrel. The dense forest makes it difficult to see too many birds but you may manage to see the Dark-necked tailorbird, Orange-headed Thrush and Grey-bellied Tesia. Our guides claim  that  in the main road cutting through this  small sanctuary more than 100 species of butterflies can be identified in the months of Oct and November as also in March-April

Nameri National Park :  is located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. It is 200 sq. km area and contiguous on its northern boundary with Pakhui National Park (810 sq. km). Nameri is really on the edge of a huge wilderness area. Both Nameri NP and Pakhui WLS are declared as Tiger Reserve  under Project Tiger. You need to cross the snow-fed Bhorelli River to visit the Park and walks are allowed (which is not permitted in Kaziranga NP).  The habitat is diverse more close to Manas National Park (which can also visited nowadays).  Sighting of wild animals is difficult but the place has over 350 species of birds. Known to be a good place to sight the White-winged Wood Duck, pax  can view Ibisbill (uncommon), Ruddy Kingfisher, Wreathed hornbill, Long-billed Ringed Plover, Sultan Tit, and Yellow-bellied and White-throated Fantails.

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary : It is part of Kameng protected areas complex (KPEC), The places is rich with birdlife having a home of more 450 spices of birds. covers a wide area—along with the adjacent Bugun Community Forest, it incorporates 218 square kilometres of highly biodiverse geography. Lying in between the plains of Assam and Gori-Chen mountain range (altitude 19,685 feet), the alpine forests of Dirang, and the Sela Pass is this belt of temperate broadleaf and conifer forest. A must for birders who want to visit this part of the country for birding in North East India.
